The Always Up Sling Bag

Most sling bag patterns I see look great on the back- super cute! But once you pull it around to your front it's suddenly upside down! You open that zipper and everything's on the floor. Not good. So I wrote the sling bag pattern I’ve aways wanted, one with a side zipper so it’s always accessible without it ever truly being upside down. You can wear it on your back and it looks great. Pull it around to your front- also great! I love having it on my back out of the way. But when I need to grab my wallet or put away my keys I just pull it around to my front- no taking it off and on. Or if I’m in a crowded space like a train or airport and I want to make sure my valuables are secure I keep the bag in my front so I can keep a hand on it. Also, it’s big! Like big enough for those massive water bottles everyone has. I have an owalla and it fits no problem. Along with sunglasses, regular glasses, phone, wallet, keys, kiddo’s epi-pens, husband’s wallet, granola bars for when kiddos inevitably get hungry….you get the idea. 🤣

Now for the fun part- the Sew Along! I decided to do a sew along to help people with their bags if they haven’t made one before. Trust me, this is easy. The curves are gentle and the zippers don’t have wild and wacky installation. And there will be prizes! I haven’t 100% gathered them yet, but we’ll start with a gift card to your favorite quilt shop (that sells digital gift cards online so I can buy one specific to the winner).

Update- The Sew Along has now completed

The Always Up Sling Bag

Coming May 26, 2025

Here’s a rough idea of the schedule. I’m thinking of starting it early June so you can be ready to travel with yours this summer! And to make one for the partner/wife/hubby/spouse and kids so they can carry their own stuff! 🤣

Week one- purchase pattern, gather supplies, and quilt your fabric (if using quilted fabric)

Week two- cut out pieces and sew pockets

Week three- sew the three main pieces together to finish the bag

A note on the fabric- I’ve been saving this Rifle Paper Co. fabric for so long! It’s part of the Camont collection. The name is Menagerie Silhouette in orange, and it looks like several colorways are still available online. Here’s one place that offers great service and fast shipping: Hawthorne Supply Co. The webbing is from the always amazing Ruby Star Society. I love this particular webbing because it’s softer than most. I bought mine from Stitch Supply.

Have any questions about the pattern or sew-along? Please email me and I’ll happily answer them!
